Most Trader Joe's stores have a hidden animal mascot tucked somewhere on the sales floor — picked by the crew to fit their neighborhood, given a name, and often a Hawaiian shirt or a regional accent. You might have heard them called the store's hidden stuffed animals, plushies, or toys; around here we know the truth — each one is a real character with a personality and a home store. Spotting them has become a low-key sport for shoppers, and TJ Mascots is the unofficial fan map of every mascot we've found.

It's a beloved hide-and-seek tradition: most Trader Joe's stores hide their mascot somewhere on the floor for shoppers (especially kids) to find. People often search for it as a "hidden stuffed animal" or "hidden toy" — but each store's mascot is really its own character, with a name and a backstory the crew gives it. Find the mascot, tell a crew member where it's hiding, and there's usually a small treat in it for you.

At most stores, if you spot the mascot and let a crew member know where it's hiding, you'll get a little reward — often a lollipop, a sticker, or a small treat. It varies store to store, and it's aimed at kids, though plenty of grown-up shoppers play along too. The mascot usually hides in a new spot each day, so it's a fresh hunt every visit.

Many Trader Joe's stores hide a small red lobster, and it's the closest thing to a chain-wide mascot — a nod to founder Joe Coulombe's nautical "trader sailing the seas" theme. But most stores also have their own local character chosen by the crew: a duck, a moose, a sea otter, a longhorn, and so on. Those store-specific mascots are what this map is all about — browse them on the map or by animal.

It's a two-person fan project, run independently by a pair of Trader Joe's shoppers who got tired of trying to remember which store had which animal. There's no commercial relationship with Trader Joe's Company.

Click the + Submit button in the header, pick the store from the dropdown, attach a photo of the mascot (the actual stuffed animal, not store signage), and add the mascot's name if you know it. Your submission goes into a private review queue and lands on the map within a day. Add your email if you want to be credited in the Hall of Fame.

Use the "Report incorrect info" link on any mascot card. We'll mark the old one as retired and add the new one — older mascots stay listed under "Previous mascots" so the store's history is preserved.

Each mascot is geocoded to its exact Trader Joe's store address, pulled from the official TJ store list. Every photo we publish was either submitted by a shopper who took it themselves or sourced from a public post (Reddit, Instagram) where the photographer is credited. If you spot a mistake, the report button on each card opens a private review queue.

Some stores don't have a mascot at all — the practice varies by store and by era. Others have mascots but no shopper has photographed them yet. Help us fill in the map: next time you're in a TJ that's missing one, look behind the bananas, snap a pic, and submit it.
