A whole covey of quails (the proper collective noun is a ‘covey’ — also acceptable: a ‘bevy’) lives at Trader Joe’s Las Vegas in Centennial Hills, on the northwest edge of the valley. The species fits the area perfectly: Gambel’s quail (Callipepla gambelii) is the iconic native quail of the Mojave Desert and a familiar sight all around suburban Vegas, easily recognized by its black face and the curling ‘teardrop’ plume on its head. They’re ground-foragers that scurry across yards and washes in family flocks, exactly like this little crew.
